"I went to Missouri, and I learned the truth."
I wrote those words years ago on the first page of the journal I keep with me always, when a palmreader in Lawrence, KA (unexpectedly named Missouri, by the way) pulled back the curtains on this world of darkness and told me that legends were real. Now those words seem young, juvenile, hardly worth admitting to in the light of day, and I get by on a hope and a prayer and the knowledge that my boys are safe.
My older son - Dean, twenty five years and sassy as you please, is off hunting evil S.O.B.'s all over America in the 1967 Chevy Impala I grew up with and gave to him last year; my brilliant baby boy Sam is pretending to be your average frat boy with a normal life at Stanford. So I've dragged my sorry ass to Los Angeles to see how well I can keep away the darkness from the folks with bright smiles and hopes for the fuckin' future.
This is the world we live in. If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
